Experiment 12: Make your own motor

This simple experiment is courtesy of a good
friend of ours (thanks Mr. M!). All you need
is a very strong (earth) magnet, a copper wire
and a battery. The wire doesn't need to touch
the magnet at the bottom, it just needs to be
close. The wire will spin very quickly around
the battery (and will get quite warm to the
touch, which also fascinated the kids).

The kids thought it was interesting that if
they flipped the magnet over, the wire spun
in the opposite direction.
